"After 7 weeks of fairly intensive work on this large oil, I’m pleased to announce that the 3rd painting in the Dances of Mexico series is complete. I have to thank my wonderful model John, who has modelled for the whole series, for this extraordinary and very beautiful costume, much of which was made by himself and his family, as is traditional. Anyone who has seen the quetzal-feather headdress of Moctezuma II will know what this pre-Columbian indigenous folk dance represents, and I’ve very much enjoyed having the colorful gilded penacho (headdress) in my studio for the last couple of months."
