Remarks
"This painting was made in front of the oldest surviving Kabuki Theater, the Konpira-za, also known as the Kanamaru-za, built in 1835 in Kotohira on the island of Shikoku, Japan. Although the theater has had a colorful history, even at one point being used as a movie theater then later abandoned, it was fully restored to its Edo period appearance in 1976. The large gravel forecourt became a part of the painting when a little ginger kitten provided a focal point, and I couldn’t resist the title ‘Kitten Kabuki’ as a play on the phrase ‘kit and caboodle’…" Binnie, March 2025.
