"In the book version, published in November by Cordes Press this design is the double-page spread illustrating a dramatic moment in the text, when the protagonist finds a floating corpse has been attached to his houseboat. Since the story is a SciFi, and we're on an alien planet, I thought we should have alien birds too, hence this creature with elements of several real birds combined.
