Remarks
"An early self portrait from my days at Edinburgh College of Art, where I studied from 1985-1990. This was made in the winter of 1985 when I was 18 years old and shows how cold it was in those tall, underheated studios in those days. Also stylistically: I had been seduced by the then-fashionable "expressive paint" that every other art student was doing, so please forgive me the sins of my youth. The head is mostly black, viridian and alizarin, because non-representational color was my fascination back then. But talking of black, where did all that thick black hair go? I must have mislaid it somewhere along the intervening nearly 40 years..." Binnie, July 2023
